High-Impact Court Decisions for High-Risk Youth

Upcoming Event
June 15, 2026, 12:30pm - 1:45pm, Eastern

Hosted by The Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center, the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ), and the State Justice Institute

As concern about youth crime and violence increases, many judges and court leaders are making harsh, ineffective, and sanctions-heavy decisions that don’t align with the research on improving public safety and reducing reoffending.

Through the Courting Judicial Excellence program—which provides training and technical assistance—the CSG Justice Center and NCJFCJ recently published new bench cards and other resources to help judges understand the research and more effectively respond to youth at high risk of committing serious offenses.

In this webinar featuring national experts and leading judicial voices, you will learn:

  • Research-backed “DOs” and “DON’Ts” for identifying high-risk youth, determining detention and disposition decisions, assessing case progress, and promoting meaningful accountability
  • How judges can use our new bench cards and related resources in the courtroom
  • Interactive case examples on how to put these concepts into practice in the courtroom and beyond

This event is open to anyone interested in improving youth outcomes and public safety but designed for judges and other juvenile court decision-makers.

Speakers:

  • Gina M. Vincent, Professor & Co-Director, Law & Psychiatry Program, UMass Chan Medical School, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Implementation Science & Practice Advances Research Center
  • Gayl Y. Branum Carr (Ret.), Commonwealth of Virginia Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts, Fairfax Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court; Past President, NCJFCJ
  • Hunter Hurst, Director, National Center for Juvenile Justice (NCJJ)
  • Josh Weber, Deputy Division Director, Corrections and Reentry, CSG Justice Center

All registrants will receive a copy of the recording and slides after the event.
